The ABCs of an Internet presence. PART 5

What does it take to get on the internet with your business, hobby or interest? I’ve been helping people do exactly this since the internet went public.

Step 5: You need professional-looking email.

If you have spent the time and money to register the perfect domain name, why not use it for your email too? In my opinion, people who use Gmail, Outlook.com or other free addresses for business email are missing a very simple step that would make their business look much more credible to customers.

You can have a large company like Microsoft (or even Google) host the email for your domain, link it to your Microsoft 365 account, or use the email feature of cPanel on your own web server.

Over the decades I have built several mail servers and hosted email accounts on them. The first was the original Microsoft Exchange server, which used a modem to dial up the Exchange server at the company you were sending mail to. I am so glad we now have the internet and those connections are no longer needed.

One tip: whoever hosts your mail, make sure your domain has SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up in DNS (see Part 2). They prove your mail really comes from you, keep it out of spam folders, and make it much harder for scammers to send email pretending to be you.

I would love to help you connect your domain to an email service so your business gets the credibility and brand exposure that comes with an address on your own domain.
